Why Shopping Canadian Small Business Matters More Than Ever

Running Steaped Slow Ceramics as a one-woman show means I wear all the hats: maker, shipper, photographer, accountant, website designer, you name it. And lately, things have been extra challenging as I had to hit pause on shipments to the US while I navigated new tariff rules and become an exporter of my handmade pottery. (Good news I figured it out and cross boarder shipping is open again!)

It’s a lot to take on, and while I work behind the scenes to sort it out, I’ve been thinking a lot about what this means for small businesses like mine. When unexpected changes pop up, they’re disruptive, not just financially, but emotionally too. Unlike big companies with departments of specialists, we small makers have to figure it all out ourselves while still doing the work we love.

That’s why shopping Canadian-made matters so much. Every purchase from a local, independent brand helps keep the lights on for artisans, supports creative entrepreneurship, and fuels a community of makers who believe in thoughtful, slow, small-batch goods.

And I know if you’re here, you already appreciate that kind of intentional living.

So, in light of everything, I want to use this moment to spotlight some of my favourite Canadian women-owned small businesses. These are brands that share the same ethos I hold at Steaped Slow Ceramics: creating high-quality, slow-made pieces you’ll truly treasure.

Over the coming months (and just in time for holiday shopping!) I’ll be introducing you to these inspiring makers. Even better? I’ll also be sharing exclusive discount codes for you to use in their shops.

This is my way of not only making the most of a tricky situation, but also helping you discover more beautiful Canadian-made goods that align with your values.

Stay tuned — the first feature is coming next week, and I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you.
